7 Reasons Why the Current Marriage Debate Is Nothing Like the Debate on Interracial Marriage

Ryan T. Anderson’s article makes the case yet again:

Is opposition to same-sex marriage at all like opposition to interracial marriage?

One refrain in debates over marriage policy is that laws defining marriage as the union of male and female are today’s equivalent of bans on interracial marriage. Some further argue that protecting the freedom to act publicly on the basis of a religious belief that marriage is the union of a man and woman is like legally enforcing race-based segregation. This leads some people to think that the government is right to fine a New York family farm $13,000 for declining to host a lesbian wedding in their barn.

These claims are wrong on several counts, as I explain in my Backgrounder: “Marriage, Reason, and Religious Liberty: Much Ado About Sex, Nothing to Do with Race.” Here are the top seven reasons why:

  1. Support for marriage as the union of man and woman has been a near human universal. Great thinkers throughout human history—and from every political community up until the year 2000—thought it reasonable to view marriage as the union of male and female, husband and wife, father and mother. That belief is shared by the Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions; by ancient Greek and Roman thinkers untouched by these religions; and by various Enlightenment philosophers. It is affirmed by canon, common and civil law and by ancient Greek and Roman law.
  2. Bans on interracial marriage and Jim Crow laws, by contrast, were historical anomalies. These bans were aspects of a much larger, insidious movement that denied the fundamental equality and dignity of all human beings and forcibly segregated citizens. When these interracial marriage bans first arose in the American colonies, they were inconsistent not only with the common law inherited from England, but also with the customs of prior world history, which had not banned interracial marriage. These bans were based not on reason, but on prejudiced ideas about race that emerged in the modern period and that refused to regard all human beings as equal. This led to revisionist, unreasonable conclusions about marriage policy.
  3. Great thinkers—including champions of human rights—knew that gender matters for marriage, and none thought that race does. Searching the writings of Plato and Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas, Maimonides and Al-Farabi, Luther and Calvin, Locke and Kant, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., one finds that the sexual union of male and female goes to the heart of their reflections on marriage but that considerations of race with respect to marriage never appear. Only late in human history do political communities prohibit intermarriage on the basis of race. Bans on interracial marriage had nothing to do with the nature of marriage and everything to do with denying dignity and equality before the law.
  4. Even cultures that embraced same-sex relationships did not treat them as marriages. Far from having been devised as a pretext for excluding same-sex relationships—as some now charge—marriage as the union of husband and wife arose in many places over several centuries entirely independent of, and well before any debates about, same-sex relationships. Indeed, it arose in cultures that had no concept of sexual orientation and in some that fully accepted homoeroticism and even took it for granted. Bans on interracial marriage, by contrast, were the result of racism and nothing more.
  5. Marriage must be color-blind, but it cannot be gender-blind. The melanin content of two people’s skin has nothing to do with their capacity to unite in the bond of marriage as a comprehensive union naturally ordered to procreation. The sexual difference between a man and a woman, however, is central to what marriage is. Men and women regardless of their race can unite in marriage, and children regardless of their race deserve moms and dads. To acknowledge such facts requires an understanding of what marriage is.
  6. Jim Crow laws were meant to divide the races, but marriage law unites men to women and children to their parents. Marriage has everything to do with uniting the two halves of humanity—men and women, as husbands and wives and as fathers and mothers—so that any children born of their union will know and be loved by the man and woman who gave them life. This is why principle-based policy has defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The argument over redefining marriage to include same-sex relationships is one over the nature of marriage. Same-sex marriage is the result of revisionism about marriage.
  7. The Supreme Court was correct in striking down bans on interracial marriage but it should not redefine marriage. In Loving v. Virginia, the Court found bans on interracial marriage to be premised on “the doctrine of White Supremacy.”The Court found “no legitimate overriding purpose independent of invidious racial discrimination which justifies this classification.” Indeed, earlier this summer, Judge Paul Niemeyer of the 4th Circuit Court explained that “Loving simply held that race, which is completely unrelated to the institution of marriage, could not be the basis of marital restrictions.” But this does not require redefining marriage. Niemeyer concludes: “To stretch Loving’s holding to say that the right to marry is not limited by gender and sexual orientation is to ignore the inextricable, biological link between marriage and procreation that the Supreme Court has always recognized.”

The Saviour Of Humanity: Environmental Socialism Or Jesus The Messiah?

Every worldview has a common basic framework.

Cosmogeny describes the origins of the universe and life.

Soteriology introduces a cosmological problem or conflict that requires addressing and describes the journey towards and means of restoring, fixing, or saving the universe and life from this problem.

Eschatology describes the end goal and final destination of the soteriological method.

The biblical worldview establishes that God is both the beginning and the end goal for humanity, with Jesus becoming human, dying, and resurrecting in order to restore us to God and giving us the choice to enter into God’s eternal family. The obvious problem to overcome is sin or rebellion against God’s character and consequently death. The eschatological promise includes a new heavens and a new earth where pain and suffering, sin and death have no place and God dwells with us on the earth forever.

The naturalist worldview likewise follows the above framework and the salvation method it offers is evolutionary progress towards greater complexity, an assumed immortality through technology, and a harmony between humanity and the natural world.

So while naturalistic atheists love to proclaim the Christianity is all about terrorising people with the idea of hell and punishment from a just and holy God (the basic concepts are accurate but they utterly deface the character and the motive because of their hatred of God), they themselves become the prophets of naturalistic doom with the herald of climate catastrophe and the promise of a technological but thoroughly socialist future.

These aforementioned prophets of naturalistic doom include POTUS Barack Obama and, disappointingly, Pope Francis who are two spokes of a United Nations wheel rolling us all towards a world government with excessive power over and access into our personal lives. That is, of course, the price we must all pay for rigidly enforced protection from environmental villainy.

Needless to say, it’s one that finds an enemy in the proclamation of the biblical Jesus and the good news concerning the Kingdom of God.

So where the free market and the freedom to live independently of government coercion, empowered by biblical Christianity and God-fearing Christian values and culture, has led many nations out of abstract poverty and corruption, Obama and the climate-worshiping leftist control freaks are out to give us all a modern shade of communism under the banner of “progressivism”.

Don’t be fooled though, the inner workings of this machine are no different from the one that murdered over one hundred million people during peacetime in the 20th century. Some one get the word out that big government always leads to oppression already!

They offer us names like “Sustainable Development Summit”, which sounds real nice but the end result will obviously look something like Obama’s crowing foreign policy achievement: the disastrous Iran deal. Either that or any of the failed communist states and really, they are probably two sides of the same coin.

Todd Stranberg makes some astute comments about Obama’s functioning plan to destroy America’s economy in the article below and it’s worth getting some insight into where this is all headed:

Obama’s De-growth Agenda

The coal industry is facing its toughest challenge since The Great Depression of 1929. The collapse in coal prices and a growing weight from new regulations has claimed dozens of firms. In just recent months, three major coal producers have filed for bankruptcy.

Alpha Natural Resources operates more than fifty underground and surface mines in five states. It is the nation’s largest producer of the type of coal used in steel production. In 2011, Alpha Natural Resources was worth $11 billion in stock value. The firm is now worth less than $7 million.
Peabody Energy Corporation, is the largest private-sector coal company in the world. In 2011, its stock traded as high as $73 per share. Today, you can buy a share in company with one single dollar.

This apocalypse in coal could have been predicted by anyone who read President Barack Obama’s views on the industry. On January 17, 2008, Obama made known his hostility toward, of all things, electricity generated from coal and coal-powered plants. He told the San Francisco Chronicle, “You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal . . . under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

Obama added “. . . So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all the greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”

The president argues against the use of coal because he views carbon dioxide as a pollutant. In a recent speech, Obama compared it to mercury. Carbon dioxide is not a poison. It is a natural part of the atmosphere. Green plants need it to grow and produce oxygen. Without it our planet would freeze.

The coal business is a vital part of the American economy. It is responsible for over 555,000 Jobs and contributes $65.7 billion to national GDP. Average wages and salaries in coal mine operations (excluding support activities and transportation) is approximately $72,200. Nearly a third of our nation’s electrical power comes from coal fired plants. The state of Kentucky gets 97% of its power from coal.

A rational president would see the damage his previous policies are inflicting on coal and change direction. Obama obviously doesn’t care about the economic impact. He has ordered the EPA to mandate a 32 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.

The White House expects wind and solar power to play a much bigger role in our energy needs, but we only get 0.4% of our power from solar and wind topped out at 4%. There is a limit to the number of new hydropower plants we can build. Unless we turn to nuclear power, this goal of coal power reduction is a pipe dream.

Another major flaw in this plan is the increase in coal consumption by other nations. China is building one coal-fired power plant every 7 to 10 days, while Japan plans to build 43 coal-fired power projects to replace its shuttered nuclear units. India is another nation with rapidly growing power needs.

The only thing Obama’s socialist plan is going to get us is blackouts, rolling brownouts, and massively higher electric bills. America has such a good power system, most Americans don’t realize how common disruption are in the third world.

The president is seeking to downsize America because he is a supporter of the de-growth agenda. This movement sees the reduction of production and consumption as a benefit to human well-being and the equity of the planet. It calls for a future where societies live within their ecological means, with open localized economies and resources more equally distributed through new forms of Democratic institutions. Obama thinks the U.S. takes too large a piece of the resource pie, so we need to cut back our demand.

Every nation that has followed the Marxist utopian blueprint has ended in disaster. Venezuela is a prime example. Right now, its economy is in a meltdown mode. Lake Maracaibo, at 5,097 square miles, is the largest fresh water lake in South America. Venezuela’s leftist government has allowed oil to leak into Lake Maracaibo, making it one of the most polluted bodies of water on earth.

The de-growth movement is just another plot by the devil to destroy America. The true goal of the environmental movement is to draw the world into a central body that would set the rules. This plan is part of Satan’s master scheme to recreate the type of control he had during the time of the Babylonian Empire. The only way to get back to Babylon is to push for world unity.

I know that environmentalists would bristle at the idea of a refurbished earth being the ultimate solution to all ecological problems. If the world is going to be “dissolved,” there is no need for us to become too attached to it. Knowing that the earth will eventually be put back in order, we need to be concerned with the preservation of our eternal souls.

“…The heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness” (2 Peter 3:10-11).

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).

When did government ever come through on all of its promises? And how often did those promises lead to the murder of its own citizens?

As for me and my house, we will trust in the Lord Jesus, Messiah.

September 2015

The list of significant events set to occur in September 2015 seems to be growing and while it’s difficult to make any definitive conclusions about what will happen, each even can in its own right be assessed.

It’s becoming clear that a lot of damage could be about to take place, even if only some of these events turn out for the worse.

Consider the following list from Daymond Duck:

There have been several good articles, pro and con, about upcoming events to watch for in Sept. 2015 (blood moons, Sabbatical year, Shemitah, etc.). To be honest, when these good articles came out I just skimmed over many of them. But I now realize that the list of things to watch for in Sept. 2015 has surpassed my ability to keep up with all of it.

So here is a list I made for myself. It is not my purpose to comment on the relevance of any of these things. But it is my purpose to have a calendar of events that I can refer to. Also, understand that because a Jewish day ends at sundown (not 12 p.m.) and because there are questions about the accuracy of the Jewish calendar some of what is being reported could be wrong.

Sept. 9: The date the Jewish Sanhedrin plans to put Pres. Obama on trial on Mt. Zion for promoting genocide of the Jewish people with the P5 +1 agreement with Iran over that nation’s nuclear weapons program. Will this trial be worthless or will it accomplish anything?

Sept. 13: The end of the Sabbatical year (at sundown on Sept. 13) and the date that a highly respected ultra-Orthodox Jewish Rabbi named Chaim Kanievsky says Israel’s Messiah will arrive. Is he right or a false prophet?

Sept. 13: Congress has 60 days to vote on the P5 + 1 agreement with Iran (signed on July 14, 2015). If Congress takes a full 60 days, this vote could be on Sept. 13. Controversy surrounds this date because there are secret deals between the IAEA and Iran that Congress has not seen.

Sept. 13: The Shemitah year (also called a Sabbath year, or a Sabbatical year, or the seventh year of the agricultural cycle) ends at sundown on Sept. 13. It is associated with financial issues; debt forgiveness; economic problems; recession; declines in the Stock Market, etc. Jonathan Cahn says the U.S. or the world could have economic problems about this time.

Sept.13-15: Rosh Hashanah (also called the Jewish New Year or the Feast of Trumpets) begins at sundown on Sept. 13 and ends at sundown on Sept. 15. Some (not all) prophecy teachers believe the Rapture could occur at the end of Rosh Hashanah this year or next year or some year.

Sept.15: The purported military drill called Joint Assistance for Development and Execution (JADE) Homeland Eradication of Local Militants (HELM) is supposed to end. Will it? Will there be a JADE HELM 2016, 2017, etc.?

Sept.15: The 70th UN General Assembly will begin meeting. During this session (not necessarily on the 15th), France is expected to present a resolution to the UN Security Council to divide the Promised Land (Two-State Solution) and to force a peace treaty on Israel and the PA. If the UN does this, their decision will lead to the beginning of the Tribulation period and the battle of Armageddon.

Sept. 20: The Jewish Sanhedrin plans to put Pope Francis on trial on Mt. Zion for officially recognizing the existence of a Palestinian State on land that God gave to Israel. Will the outcome be recognized by God?

Sept. 22-23: Yom Kippur (also called the Day of Atonement or the Feast of Atonement) begins at sundown on Sept. 22. This will mark the beginning of the next year of Jubilee (the 50th year) which involves focus on God, the cancellation of debts, restoration of land to the original owners, etc. Will God focus on economic issues, Israel’s restoration to the land, etc.?

Sept. 23: Pope Francis is scheduled to visit the White House for discussions with Pres. Obama about their shared values on caring for the poor (wealth redistribution), religious freedom, immigration (elimination of borders), environmental issues (global warming), etc.

Sept. 24: Pope Francis is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress about world peace, religious values (probably a need for a world religion), caring for the poor, etc.

Sept. 25: Pope Francis is scheduled to address the UN. He wants to reduce the world’s population, regulate global climate change, establish a global constitution, establish a global court and establish a one-world government.

Sept. 25-27: The UN plans to hold a Sustainable Development Summit to expand the role of global governance (world government). They plan to discuss global economic issues, climate change, global education and gender equality. It is really a plan to control the life of everyone on earth.

Sept. 28: The Feast of Tabernacles and the fourth blood moon in the current Tetrad will take place on this date. Several major prophetic events have happened just before or just after other blood moon Tetrads. The Jewish Talmud (not the Bible) says blood moons are a sign of war in Israel. Several major end-of-the-age wars are mentioned in the Bible and some are prophecy teachers believe some or all of these could soon occur.

This convergence of events in Sept. 2015 is why many people think something big is about to happen. We shall soon know.

As always, the church should watch and pray so that when trouble comes, we are able to stand firm and point people to Jesus.
